Playground Event Aims to Inspire the Next Generation of Biotech Entrepreneurs

Index Ventures is hosting a one day event specifically designed for scientists with an interest in establishing a biotech startup.The event is called ³Playground² to convey the fun and energy of the
startup world as well as providing opportunities to meet peers and
industry experts.
Dr Kevin Johnson, a partner at Index Ventures, said "We have put this
event together because whilst we do of course get asked about the
technicalities of setting up a startup, we've been overwhelmed by
lifestyle questions along the lines of, what am I letting myself in for?
So we decided to do something about it and put on an event aimed squarely at answering this question.
This is the first event of its type that we have run, and we hope it will
be the first of many.
"Five successful biotech entrepreneurs will give an insight into their
lives and lifestyle. They will talk about what drove them, what makes them
tick, how life has changed and how they've coped with the ups and downs,
and crucially, how they've managed to have a life outside the startup
cauldron.
"We¹ll also have a session where the audience will get to play the VC, and
get another perspective on the startup world."
Dr Johnson added: "Anyone who lives in the world of startups can relate to
the fact that too many people are thinking of security instead of
opportunity. They seem more afraid of life than death.
"This is highly relevant to our Playground event. We aim to highlight the
huge upside in running your own business, demystify the practicalities,
and inspire the next generation of biotech entrepreneurs."
Among the speakers are Peter Hecht, CEO of Ironwood Pharmaceuticals,
Stelios Papadopolous, former vice-chairman of Cowen & Co and Joanna
Horobin, President of Syndax Pharmaceuticals.
Playground is being held on Thursday, October 18, at The Brewery in
Central London. Registration is between 8a.m. and 10a.m.
